The 2020 Census User Experience Survey is a brief survey asking a sample of respondents who used the online 2020 Census questionnaire how satisfied they were with their experience.  If respondents were dissatisfied, the survey collects information on what problems respondents had.

Data collected from this survey will help improve future online data collections and help identify any problem areas within the current 2020 Census online questionnaire. This survey provides information that cannot be collected elsewhere.  It is an opportunity for the public to let us know how the online questionnaire worked.

Sampled respondents will receive no more than three text messages asking for voluntary participation in the survey.  The phone numbers sampled were those provided by respondents in the 2020 Census.

A limited number of people from across the country were scientifically selected to represent the entire population.  We sent you a text message because you provided your phone number in your response to the 2020 Census.  Now we would like to hear your feedback on the census. Your participation is important, and your response cannot be replaced by anyone else.

The 2020 Census User Experience Survey will take place between August and October 2020.

The Census Bureau is only using text messages to notify people about this survey.  There will be no email and no postal mail associated with this survey.  Text messages will only be sent from one of three phone numbers:

Click on the link in the text message to respond to the survey.  If we have not received a response from you, you may receive follow-up texts.  The survey closes after 10 days, so be sure to answer the survey as soon as you receive the text.

Only those who have been selected to participate can complete the survey.

The U.S. Census Bureau is required by law to protect your information. The Census Bureau is not permitted to publicly release your responses in a way that could identify you.

We are conducting this voluntary survey​ under the authority of Title 13, United States Code, Sections 141 and 193. The purpose of collecting this information is to improve and inform future surveys.

Federal law protects your privacy and keeps your answers confidential (Title 13, United States Code, Section 9). Per the Federal Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2015, your data are protected from cybersecurity risks through screening of the systems that transmit your data. 

Your privacy is protected by the Privacy Act of 1974 (5 U.S.C. Section 552a). The Privacy Act permits sharing of information you provided with Census Bureau staff for the work-related purposes identified in this statement and the Privacy Act System of Records Notice (SORN) COMMERCE/CENSUS-5, Decennial Census Programs.

This collection has been approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). This eight-digit OMB approval number, 0607-0971, confirms this approval. The expiration date is 02/28/2023.
