The Commuting Patterns of Older Workers

Written by:
Report Number ACS-45

Introduction

This report explores the work-related travel of older workers in the United States. Using data from the American Community Survey, it describes the growing role of older workers over the preceding decade, and characterizes the relationship between age and commuting along several dimensions – mode of travel, duration of commute, and time of departure. The report also explores population characteristics including geographic location, disability status, race and ethnicity, and income. The commuting behaviors of the older workers differ from those of the younger workers and contribute to changing travel patterns.
