Information for Respondents to the Decennial Census of Population and Housing

In 2017 a sample of households will be contacted about participating in the 2017 Census Test. In 2018, households in specific test sites throughout the country will be asked to participate in the 2018 End-to-End Census Test. The U.S. Census Bureau is researching modern and cost-efficient methods for the population to exercise its civic obligation to be counted in the 2020 Census.

Each month, a sample of households throughout the nation are contacted to participate in the American Community Survey, an ongoing survey that provides vital information on a yearly basis about our nation and its people. Information from the survey generates data that help determine how more than $675 billion in federal and state funds are distributed each year.

The Census Bureau also collects a variety of other surveys and censuses beyond the Decennial Census Program. If you, your household, or your business is selected for a census or survey, you have a great opportunity to represent thousands of Americans and/or businesses.  Thank you for your interest and participation.

If you have specific concerns or questions, you may contact one of our Respondent Advocates. They serve as Organizational Ombudsmen to advocate for respondents in all matters relating to Census Bureau surveys and censuses.
