How 2022 Economic Census Data is Disseminated

CONTENT

The key statistics produced from the Economic Census provide information on the total number of establishments; sales, value of shipments, or revenue; total number of employees; annual payroll; first quarter payroll; and industry-specific statistics by primary business activity based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Data is made available for over 21,000 geographic areas including the U.S. Territories. Additionally, data are published for over 3,700 goods and services based on the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS).

Industry revisions are a regular feature of NAICS, occurring every 5 years. The 2022 Economic Census statistics are published based on the 2022 NAICS vintage. For additional information on NAICS and NAICS changes, visit: https://www.census.gov/naics.

STATISTICS SETS

Separate data releases are produced as part of the Economic Census.  These include:

  • First Look Statistics- Preliminary general statistics for the U.S. at a broad industry level level (2-3 digit NAICS)
    • Separate tables available by sector (level of detail varies)
  • Geographic Area Statistics- General statistics for the U.S., states, and selected geographies at varying detailed industry levels (2-8 digit NAICS-based)
    • Separate tables available by sector
    • These data supersede the data shown in the First Look Statistics
  • Establishment and Firm Size Statistics- Summary statistics at the U.S level, by employment size; sales, value of shipments, or revenue size for establishments and firms; single unit and multiunit firms; concentration of largest firms; and legal form of organization.
  • Product Statistics- Statistics about products and services based on NAPCS shown in 2 tables, 2 different ways:
    • Industry by Products for the U.S. and States
    • Products by Industry for the U.S.
  • Miscellaneous Statistics- Most of these statistics tables are industry-specific (meaning they cover only 1 NAICS sector) on special topics, but a few tables provide data for multiple NAICS. Geography level varies by industry (U.S., States, Counties, and offshore areas).
  • Comparative Statistics- presents data for the U.S., states, and selected geographies at a 2-6 digit NAICS-based level for 2022 and 2017, tabulated on the 2017 NAICS basis.
  • Bridge Statistics- presents data at the U.S. level for industries whose NAICS codes changed from 2017 to 2022 showing components of the NAICS change in two reports: 2022 NAICS industries and their 2017 NAICS-based parts; and 2017 NAICS industries and their 2022 NAICS-based parts.
  • Island Area Statistics- Statistics by geographic area, establishment and firm size, products, and miscellaneous subjects for the Island Areas (U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa)

FINDING DATA

Data from the 2022 Economic Census are disseminated in the following formats:

  1. Data Tables- Access formatted tables in a default view on data.census.gov.  Users can modify tables; add/remove geographies and NAICS codes; download in xls, csv, and ZIP formats; and view notes. Some formatted tables are too large to display in data.census.gov. To view a complete larger table or datasets, users should download FTP files.
  2. -  Data from the 2022 Economic Census that cover multiple industries can be accessed from the Multi-Sector Statistics (NAICS Sector “00”) webpage. The Multi-Sector Statistics webpage includes Geographic Area, Product, Establishment and Firm Size, Comparative, Bridge, and select multi-sector Miscellaneous Statistics.

    -  Data from the 2022 Economic Census that cover specific NAICS sectors or Island Areas (IA) can be accessed from each separate NAICS Sector or IA webpage. The sector-specific webpages include Geographic Area and Miscellaneous Statistics.

  3. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) files– Download complete data tables and/or datasets in zip format. All FTP files for the 2022 Economic Census can be found in the FTP Directory. For instructions on how to download FTP files, see FAQ (Question 27).
  4. API (Application Programming Interface)– Access complete datasets in html, xml, or json formats. See Economic Census APIs for details. Useful for programmers who want to create their own downloads from the complete dataset.
